There’s No One ‘Best’ Evident Instrument for Everyone

You’re looking at the sticker price first because you have to justify every single line item to a purchasing manager.
I get it. I’ve been in the same spot. In Q2 2024, I was comparing quotes for a $4,200 annual contract for a basic QC setup. Vendor A quoted $3,800. Vendor B quoted $3,200. I almost went with B immediately. But I calculated the total cost: Vendor B charged $350 for setup, $150 for a “user license,” and $200 for shipping. Total: $3,900. The trap here is trying to buy one system that does everything. It rarely works well. A universal microscope will be okay at everything and great at nothing. A dedicated thermal camera for one specific test is a waste if you use it once a year.
So what do you do? I found a workable solution after a lot of trial and error.
- Buy the core workhorses. A solid mid-range evide NDT equipment set and a versatile microscope will cover 80% of your needs.
- Rent or lease the specialty stuff. For the FV4000 confocal microscope, if you only need it twice a year, rent it. Costs about $1,500–2,000 per week, vs. $50,000 to buy it.
- Invest in software integration. I’m serious. If you have a Rice Lake weighing system, their programming language can be a pain if you don’t have someone who knows it. I learned this the hard way when I said “standard protocol” and the vendor assumed I meant their proprietary format. We ended up with $1,200 in redo fees because of a communication mismatch.
How to Know Which Scenario You’re In
Honestly, it’s pretty simple. Ask yourself two questions:
