Calibration, Training, or Just a Setting? Evident Microscopes, Multimeter Calibration, and a Mitutoyo Micrometer Quirk

Three reasons your instrument seems broken
When a piece of measurement equipment starts acting up, people jump to the dramatic explanation: hardware failure. It needs service. Some days I do the same.
But in my experience, most problems fall into one of three buckets:
- Training gap. The person using it hasn't been shown the correct setup or operation.
- Calibration drift. The instrument is consistent but measuring against a shifted reference.
- Settings confusion. The hardware is fine; the configuration is what's fighting you.
The fix for one bucket can make another worse. That's why my first question is never 'what's the part number?' It's 'what exactly is it doing?'
Scenario A: New Evident microscope or flaw detector that doesn't work
Start with training before calibration? Let me tell you about the $3,200 mistake.
In March 2022, a customer called about an Evident ultrasonic flaw detector. The signal was unstable. I approved a replacement after a rushed call. New unit, same problem. Finally, the customer sent a photo: the transducer cable was not seated correctly. It was in the manual. A 20-minute training session would have fixed it.
That one hurt. I had told myself: don't assume hardware failure. But I still approved a replacement before asking the obvious questions.
The same pattern happens with an Evident scientific microscope. A lab reports streaks in the image. Often, the objective is not clicked in, the aperture is set wrong, or the immersion oil is old. Not a defect. A training gap.
My rule now: if a person is new to the instrument, training comes before service. A remote session or a one-day class costs a fraction of a service visit. It usually prevents the service visit entirely.
Scenario B: Multimeter calibration vs. multimeter training
Now the opposite mistake. A meter gives the same wrong reading every time. That is not a training problem. That is a calibration problem.
I learned this the expensive way. A field technician was convinced his meter was fine because he had always used it that way. I believed him. I put him through multimeter training, which cost $850 and was not the right answer. The meter needed calibration. The reference was off by 0.8%. A certified calibration cost $220 and took two days.
So here's the decision rule:
- Stable, repeatable, wrong readings? Calibrate. Look for a lab with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation so the result is traceable to national standards such as NIST.
- Different readings every time you measure the same thing? That is usually technique, probes, or range selection. That is where multimeter training helps.
I like the second half of that rule because it goes against my gut. More than once, I've been tempted to send a meter to calibration when the real issue was a worn probe. The meter was perfect. The operator was fine. The probe had a broken lead. Check the simple variables first.
Scenario C: How to turn off a Mitutoyo digital micrometer
This sounds trivial until you're staring at a dead battery at 7 PM.
Every month, someone reaches us with the search query 'how to turn off Mitutoyo digital micrometer.' I used to chuckle. Then a lab manager called me. New-to-them micrometer, display would not sleep, battery died in a week. They thought it was broken.
It was not. It was a power-setting issue. The fix was in the manual, but it was buried.

Ask yourself three questions.
- Did this exact setup work before, with the same person? If yes, training is not the first stop. Look at calibration or settings.
- Are readings repeatable? If the instrument gives the same wrong value every time, calibration is probably the answer. If readings bounce around, examine the user, the probe, and the range setting before paying for a service visit.
- Does the behavior match any setting described in the manual? If you're stuck on a button or power mode, that is a documentation issue, not a hardware failure.
I also keep a one-page checklist near the bench. It has the model number, last calibration date, and the manual page for power settings. That's it. In the last 18 months, that checklist has caught 47 potential errors before they turned into service orders.
One more thing, and I mean this as someone who has been the small client: small labs and solo technicians deserve the same honest answer as a large company. I have placed $200 calibration orders that got better service than some $20,000 orders. A vendor that ignores a small order today should not be surprised when that small lab becomes someone else's big account tomorrow.
